"This is the old James Dillavou home in Kendrick Township, Greene Co, Iowa. Probably built in the 1860s-1870s. This picture was taken by my grandfather, William H. Baggs, in the 1930s or 1940s. I cannot accurately identify the people in the picture, but am certain that they are mostly Dillavou descendants who gathered for one of the many Dillavou reunions. The house has long since been demolished."  Steven Baggs

I have to correct a 15-year old error. About 1991, I visited the Seneca, Kansas cemeteries where John Dillavou and his 3rd wife are buried. Sarah's stone (shown at right) was weather-worn and hard to read. I thought it said "Died May 13, 1879. Aged 88 Ys 24 Ds". That calculated to her having been born in 1791, and since John was born 1790, I assumed I was correct. Well --- 15 years later, I realized a big mistake.

I just found her before she married ol' John in the 1850 census and she was 38 (meaning b. abt. 1812) and in the 1870 census, she was 69 (meaning 1811)... so I dug out the pic I had of the stone and determined that I mis-read her age and it actually must be "Aged 68 Ys, 24 Ds". So she was about 20 years younger, and that difference works better considering that her son married his granddaughter. So with the re-calculations, Sarah A. (Johnson) Hughes Dillavou was born 19 April 1811 and died 13 May 1879.  -Steve Baggs
